LET'S SAMBA TOGETHER!
Now that you know all four of our Samba rhythms and instruments, it is time to play them together. Your teacher will split the class into four groups. Each group will be responsible for playing a different instrument with its corresponding rhythm.
This takes a lot of concentration. You will need to listen to the steady beat, and follow it with your rhythm. Be careful not to play the rhythm of a different instrument when you hear it. It may help to look at the poster with your rhythm on it. Watch the video and then try it with your class.
Note to teachers: This video shows how to put all four instruments together. It might be easier to try this with the metronome without the video. Start with the steady beat. Start the ganzas. Once they are able to play it on their own they should keep playing, and you can count in the tamborims. Once the tamborims are independent, they should keep playing, and then start the reco recos. Finally, start the agogo bells. At this point, all of the instruments should be playing their respective rhythm simultaneously.
Use the metronome to help you keep a steady beat. Change the BPM to 65 to match the tempo of the video clip.

SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW
You have learned so much! To share your samba skills, you will work with a team of four to create a 3-part video. See the image below for the directions for each part of the video.
Note to teachers: There is great flexibility with this project-based assessment that depends upon your resources and time. Students could create multimedia slides and import them, along with the video clips, into a movie making application. Students could record the video clips using a green screen. Or, students could simply read their similarities and differences with the samba music at the beginning and end.

Step 1: Practice your small ensemble samba
Work together as a team so that each member selects a samba instrument they are content with. One at a time, practice your rhythm by saying it first, and then playing it. Use the metronome to help you keep a steady beat. After everyone has had a turn independently, turn on the metronome, and try playing all of the rhythms at the same time. It will be helpful for one group member to count you in.
Use the metronome to help you keep a steady beat.
Step 2: Compare and contrast Brazil with your country
Now, think about all of the information about Brazil, and think about America (or the country in which you live). Take time to brainstorm a list of similarities and difference between your own country and Brazil. Download and print the graphic organizer to help you record your thoughts. As you brainstorm, you should have at least one similarity or difference per category.
Step 3: Record your video!
Talk with your team about what you want your video to be like. Make sure to share at least one similarity or difference per category, and make sure to explain that similarity or difference in detail. Decide upon how you will take turns speaking and what you will say. Once you feel like you've made all of the decisions, practice your performance. Then, have a classmate record it.

Assessing Your Work
When you feel like you are finished, use the checklist as a guide to check your work. Revise if you had to check "no" in any of the categories.
Once all groups are finished, hold a viewing party. As you watch each group's video, use the checklist to evaluate each group. Your teacher will have multiple copies for you. If you have additional positive comments or suggestions for any of the groups, write them on the back of the checklist before handing it in.
Note to teachers: Post a large version of this checklist, and then copy multiple small versions for students so that they can assess each group as their video is presented.
