What is the difference between this year's Remote Learning and last year's virtual program?
Current CDC guidelines emphasize the importance of in-person learning, with layered mitigation strategies to reduce the spread of Covid. Arts Academy Elementary Charter School was required to offer virtual learning options last year, when the CDC guidance supporting the closing of schools due to the pandemic. While we are not offering a virtual programs, we will support students who are not able to be in the school building.
Remote learning involves more asynchronous (independent) work than was included in our virtual learning program. Students will complete their teachers' assignments as they are listed either in Jupiter, Google Classroom or as otherwise communicated by the teacher.
Asynchronous Assignments
ELA and Math work will be completed asynchronously, through i-Ready's My Path and teacher-assigned lessons, and other assignments either sent home or that can be completed online.
Science and Social Studies work will involve worksheets sent home; assignments in Discovery Education, Mystery Science or other programs assigned by the teacher.
Live Meetings
Students will sign into Jupiter to be marked present and to find the Zoom links for:
Daily Check-in: for students who are out on extended quarantine 5 or more days.
Morning Meeting: where the whole class is virtual, to confirm the day's assignments and to be marked present for the day.
Arts classes, where the whole class is virtual, to participate in live learning activities with an arts instructor.
Other Times as Scheduled with the teacher, specialist or EL teacher for instruction, review and support.
In the Remote Learning environment, our EL and Special Education specialists will have scheduled meetings with students. If a student's ELA and/or Math class was in the special education setting, the special education teacher will provide the lessons to be completed as well as live meeting time for instruction, review and support.
Yes, students bring home their school-assigned iPad (kindergarten) or Chromebook (grades 1-5) to complete work and sign into Zoom meetings. This device must be returned upon completion of the remote learning period. Students also need their Clever badge to access their device. Contact your child's teacher if you are in need of a new one.
Students who do not have access to Internet will be provided a mobile Hot Spot for Internet access. Contact office@artsacademyecs.org for more information.
This is a day that can be used in place of in-person learning schoolwide, either due to a spike in Covid cases within the school community or due to inclement weather. In the event of a Flexible Instruction Day, or F.I.D., student will have all regularly-scheduled classes online, via Zoom. To accommodate for our younger students, the longer blocks for Math and ELA may be shortened, to allow time for students to work independently, between live meetings.
Attendance will be counted in multiple ways, to ensure student engagement for the school day:
Sign Into Jupiter Portal: Students must sign into their Jupiter account. The Jupiter portal keeps a record of student sign-in activity for attendance purposes. This is also where the teachers' Zoom links can be found.
Sign Into Zoom Meetings: Students must sign into their teacher's Zoom meeting as scheduled.
Complete Assignments: Students who are not able to connect online, are still required to submit work as assigned, when they are due. This work will include asynchronous online assignments and/or packets of work provided by the teacher, to consider the students to be present for the school day.
Excused Absences: Parents must submit an excuse in writing within 3 days upon the return to in-person or remote learning for absences to be considered excused.
Mrs. Micciche meets regularly with all classes for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activities. In the event that an entire class is learning remotely, she will meet with the class during the regularly-scheduled time. For individuals who are operating remotely, Mrs. Micciche is available for small group or individual meetings. If you have additional concerns, please contact Mrs. Nancy Geyer, Student Services Coordinator at ngeyer@artsacademyecs.org or by calling the school at 610-841-4560.
