Ecuadorian, Chicago-based artist Florencia Cruz transforms knits through explorations of fiber and material. She investigates themes like the transition from childhood to womanhood, the experience of romance and hardships that exist within womanhood, and the practice of craft passed down through generations. She contrasts the hard and the soft in materiality through delicate pieces that sometimes are being weighed down, or are being restricted by structures.
Florencia completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2024, receiving the Honors Scholarship during her time in undergrad. She interned at Ballet Chicago working on mending and tailoring in the fall of 2025. Currently, she is in her second year of the Master of Fashion, Body and Garment program at SAIC, having received the Visionary Scholars Award for the three year program, expected to graduate in the spring of 2027.
