Emergencies, Fire Safety
and First Aid Procedures
and First Aid Procedures
For any injuries, including minor cuts or serious incidents with visible blood, see security personnel, who are trained in first aid. Each classroom has a small first aid kit with band-aids and ice packs for minor bumps and bruises. For other incidents, or if you are ever unsure of the proper protocol for an incident, contact security.
Evacuation
An evacuation is implemented under conditions when it is no longer safe to remain in a building or a specific area in a building. This requires occupants to move out and away from a building to an area of refuge or out and away from a specific area within a building. This procedure is most commonly used when there is a suspected fire, hazardous material spill, flooding, gas leak, bomb, or other threat in a building.
For classes in the Sharp Building, gather at 55 E. Monroe. Make sure you or your TA takes a headcount of students.
Fire Alarms
Students with mobility restrictions should wait in the stairwell landing or designated assistance spot for assistance from emergency personnel. It is the instructor’s responsibility to notify security and/or emergency personnel of the location and name of the student waiting for assistance. “Jane Smith is on the 7th floor east stairwell.”
In the case of a drill, students with mobility restrictions can wait with faculty or a friend in the stairwell landing or designated safety zone.
“SAIC’s Security Safe List” (for mobility aid/notifications)
If a student of yours gets or has an injury and, as a consequence, has mobility restrictions (e.g., sprained ankle, walking with a boot), please notify saic-youth@saic.edu or saic-ace@saic.edu. We will then reach out to the security team on your behalf. The SAIC Security team maintains a list of students, called the "Safe List," of students, faculty, and staff who might need aid in an emergency. This is an internal checklist to locate those patrons outside of class time and when there may not be an instructor or staff member around.
