Arrowtown Primary School has a well established and successful kapa haka programme. Students choose whether they want to be a part of these roopu on a yearly basis.
2019: This year we are extremely excited to share that our groups are continually growing. All Year 0-2 students at Arrowtown Primary will participate in kapa haka. They will perform at Central Lakes Polyfest in Term 4. Year 0-2s rehearse on a Friday afternoon with all of their teachers.
Year 3 & 4 Kapa Haka - these students rehearse on a Thursday afternoon. Kathleen Brentwood leads this group with the help of our senior tuakana.
Year 5-8 Kapa Haka - This year we have the largest amount of students we have ever had participating in senior kapa haka. Our seniors rehearse on a Wednesday afternoon with tutors Stacey Anderson, Paul Winders, Geraldine Gray and Ata Maiava. This group performs together at times but will be rehearsing separately to prepare for 2 groups competing in Ngā Putangitangi in October.
2018: Kapa Haka has grown immensely over the last few years. We have a senior roopu from Years 5 - 8 who compete and are involved in performing at many local events. We have a lot of students involved in kapa haka in the junior school. This year we will develop interest in waiata from Years 0-2 and prepare our Year 3 & 4 students for transition to Senior Kapa Haka.
2017: Kapa haka at Arrowtown Primary is separated into two roopu: Junior Years 0-4 and Senior Years 5-8. Our senior roopu are tutored by Mr Paul Winders, Geraldine Gray, Marley Maiava and Te Tuhi Purakau. 50 students have opted to join this group in 2017 and they rehearse on a Thursday afternoon from 1:30pm - 3pm. Stacey Anderson and Kathleen Brentwood tutor our Junior roopu with the support of many junior staff each week. 80 students have opted to join this group in 2017 and they rehearse on a Monday afternoon from 2:15pm-3pm.
