The bills that we are trying to pass are H. 912 An Act Relative to Forest Protection and H. 1002 An Act Relative to Increased Protection of Wildlife Management Areas. H 912 fights climate change, makes it so less trees can be cut down, and prevents the use of chemicals (such as pesticides and herbicides). H. 1002 will make 30% or more of the agency's land into Nature Reserves by 2030, and will help study biological and climate science. For more info click here.
Lots of people have heard of REforestation and DEforestation, but our campaign is about PROforestation. It’s not just about planting new trees, it’s also about protecting our already existing forests so they can grow old. Protecting old trees will help slow climate change more than it would if you just planted trees because they are able to take more carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The trees provide long term storage of carbon dioxide in their branches, trunks, and leaves. This doesn’t mean planting trees isn’t important, but protecting our existing forests should be our priority.
Climate change is connected to trees because trees can absorb the carbon in the air, and when they are cut down they release all their carbon back into the atmosphere. Too much carbon is bad for the Earth because it can block heat from escaping. Plants remove carbon in the air through photosynthesis. The heat trapped in the atmosphere is called green house gases. The more deforestation happening is the worse climate change gets.
This video illustrates the forces behind climate change and how they are changing over time. Watch the upper right-hand corner of the video to see the years change.
