*****
When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
Content Advisory: This show is based on an autobiographical work by Alison Bechdel, whose father committed suicide when she was in college. We learn early in the show of these circumstances through an adult version of Bechdel, whose narration drives the rest of the script. One of the final scenes suggestively depicts the father's death from stepping out into oncoming traffic, with adult Alison commenting on the event.
Despite the heaviness of this part of the story, the show's overall tone is one of inspiration and self-discovery. Students and families will are encouraged to reach out to Bech or Mr. Fruth if they'd like to discuss the show content further.
