The library is one of the busiest places at ARHS, with nearly one quarter of the student body dropping by every day to independently, finish up a research project, connect with teachers or friends, or find their next read. The expecations in the library are simple: be respectful of others, take responsibility for yourself and your actions, and care for the shared resources and community spaces in the library. This means speaking quietly, not eating food except in designated areas, picking up after yourself when you go, returning books and other library materials on time and in good condition, and respecting requests from library staff.
Students may visit the library anytime on a pass from their academic teacher, during their lunch most days, or by making individual research and writing appointments to meet with Ms. Stocker, Emily, or Paul for 1:1 academic help. Students who are not able to meet the expectations for library behavior may be asked to leave and repeat issues may mean that students are not able to come to the library without direct supervision from a teacher or staff member.
Circulation
The majority of library materials circulate for three weeks and will renew automatically one time. Some materials, such as books on the carts for research projects, may have a shorter circulating material during specific times of the year. Reference books and special collections materials do not circulate at all.
You will receive several reminders about overdue items. All overdue items not returned, renewed, or replaced after three months past their original due date will be automatically considered lost. The student or staff member is then responsible for replacing this item either by purchasing a replacement copy, paying for the lost item, or collaborating with the librarian on an alternative.
Collection Development
The library makes every effort to ensure that our collection reflects the diverse needs of our student body, including their experiences, identities, interests., and needs Titles and resources are selected, reviewed, and removed based on the professional expertise of the librarian, their relevance to the curriculum, student/faculty interest or need, the credibility of the resource, and alignment with school, district, and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education policies and values, as outlined in the School Committee policies on Library Materials Selection (Policy IJL) and Instructional Materials Reconsideration (IJA)
We welcome requests and suggestions for purchase. The ARPS community is also welcome to donate new or like-new books. In both cases, the librarian reserves the right to determine if a book is appropriate for the ARHS Library. We respectfully request that you contact the library before dropping off books.
