Veterans Treatment Court provides eligible veterans involved in the criminal justice system with an opportunity to address underlying challenges, receive specialized treatment, and work toward rehabilitation and long-term stability. Through a combination of judicial supervision, treatment services, mentorship, and community support, the program helps veterans overcome obstacles, rebuild their lives, and successfully reintegrate into their communities.
Eligibility and Participation
Veterans interested in participating in Veterans Treatment Court may be referred by their defense attorney, the prosecuting attorney, or another court. Participation is voluntary and subject to approval by the Veterans Treatment Court team. Certain cases, including those involving domestic violence, may require additional approval from the victim.
Treatment and Support Services
The program addresses underlying challenges that may contribute to a veteran's involvement in the criminal justice system. Depending on individual needs, participants may receive court-ordered counseling, treatment recommended by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other supportive services. These may include treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mental health conditions, and substance use disorders.
Participants may also be required to complete random drug and alcohol testing, community service, work programs, and other court-ordered activities.
A central component of Veterans Treatment Court is its volunteer mentorship program. Participants are paired with fellow veterans who provide encouragement, guidance, accountability, and peer support throughout the rehabilitation process. These mentors help participants navigate challenges, remain engaged in treatment, and work toward successful program completion.
Program Completion and Legal Outcomes
Veterans who successfully complete the program may qualify for amended charges, dismissal, or conditional dismissal, depending on the offense and applicable legal requirements.
For certain offenses, including driving under the influence (DUI) and domestic battery, charges may be conditionally dismissed following graduation. These offenses may continue to count as prior offenses for enhancement purposes if another qualifying offense occurs within seven years. Records associated with conditional dismissals are not automatically sealed, although eligible participants may petition the court for record sealing after the applicable waiting period.
For other qualifying offenses resulting in dismissal, records may be sealed following successful completion, subject to applicable law and court procedures.
Veterans Treatment Court generally requires a minimum commitment of one year. Participants who consistently comply with treatment plans, court requirements, and program expectations may graduate within this period. Noncompliance may result in an extension of participation.
