Parent Tips for Reading with your child (K-2)
1:1 correspondence (the child points to each word with their finger and read aloud)
Parents check that the sentence makes sense (have they stopped at a full stop)
Rule of Three (if your child is having difficulty reading a page, the child reads the page once, the parent and the child read the same page together, then the child reads the same page again on their own out aloud). Repeat for each page if necessary.
Additional prompts to assist with reading fluency;
Can I sound the word out?
Is it a sight word?
Can I use the pictures?
Does it make sense?
The parent asks questions to make sure that the child understands what they have read, eg What happened, Why did it happen, Who was it, How could it have changed/been different?
