Hello! I'm Luke Wink Moran—journalism master's student at the University of Arizona specializing in written and multimedia storytelling.
I decided to write this story about how social media has changed publishing because I’ve been a reader my whole life, and I’ve never known how books are made. I wanted to find out how the publishing industry works, why it works that way, and how it’s changing.
Along the way, I found out that the industry is in the middle of two of the most significant changes in its history: It found a new marketing engine in TikTok, and it’s moving towards diversity. The two changes are not unrelated, but TikTok may be undermining the very push for diversity that it helped to vitalize.
