Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki in 1985. The studio is well-known worldwide for presenting magical art and storytelling to its audience. Studio Ghibli targets a Japanese audience and reaches a global one. It became so popular that people began referring to it as “the Disney of Japan” because of the fantastic themes it offers to international viewers. “The Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli is often rather tritely passed off as ‘the Disney of Japan’” (Wood, 2016). This statement clearly shows that Studio Ghibli is recognized globally. Our group chose to approach this topic by examining how Studio Ghibli addresses global and cultural themes through Japanese popular culture. The questions we chose to discuss are:
1. How has Studio Ghibli helped make Japanese culture more known around the world?
Written by Alken, adressing how Studios Ghibli's rich visual style and heartfelt storyline have been instrumental in bringing Japanese culture to viewers throughout the world. By incorporating Shinto beliefs, ancient folklore, and everyday Japanese life into its films, the studio provides audiences worldwide with a glimpse into Japan's history, values, and creativity. Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro are two examples of films that do more than merely amuse. They also subtly teach viewers about Japanese traditions, nature worship, and family relationships, fostering a respect of Japanese culture.
2. What makes Studio Ghibli’s animation style stand out from other studios, and how does the art help tell a story?
Written by Isaac, talking about how the studio Ghibli animation style has changed the course of animation in the future by helping gender stereotypes and using an old style of art to make the scenes beautiful and scenic. While also showcasing how they stand out using a timeless art style of drawing strictly by hand.
3. How did Studio Ghibli raise the standards for animation in Japan?
Written by Junhong, exploring various techniques Studio Ghibli uses in anime production and why they have gained such enormous audience all across the globe from a cultural and their unique anime production methods and pursuit's perspective and therefore raise the standard across the entire anime industry to make better products overall.
4. What are the common themes expressed in Studio Ghibli films?
Written by Fatmah, who will explore the recurring themes in Studio Ghibli films and how they resonate with audiences of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
By addressing these questions, the audience will gain a better understanding of how Studio Ghibli has succeeded in portraying global and cultural themes through Japanese culture.
