Mine INtelligencE and Sustainability Lab
Assessing ground conditions in underground mines during excavation can be difficult and unsafe for mine workers and engineers. A continuous monitoring system for ground conditions with minimum geohazard exposure to workers is needed to ensure rock mass stability in underground mines. Our research lab has developed a sensor-based geotechnical monitoring framework that deploys a three-dimensional digital twin for underground mines.
The mining industry, critical for global resource supply, has historically been linked to significant environmental degradation and social challenges including habitat disruption, and water and soil contamination as well as fatalities. But recently the industry has been undergoing a transformative change to meet evolving environmental and societal expectations. Our research lab has employed tools such as operations research and machine learning to optimize sustainable and dynamic decision-making in mine planning.
Automation plays a significant role in mining by improving operational efficiency, safety, and productivity. Our lab develops technology based on Sensors and Input Devices, AI systems, and software for improved safety and operational efficiency.
The social science of mining focuses on the human, social, and community-related aspects of mining activities, aiming to understand the complex interactions between mining operations and society. Our research lab focuses on women in the mining industry promoting gender equity and inclusion. We also conduct environmental anthropology research in mining communities for environmental justice and equity
