Learning the PIE method for writing paragraphs was the most significant takeaway for me from this writing class. This method provided me with a clear and structured approach to writing paragraphs that I had not previously encountered. It offers a simple, nearly fail-proof way to structure paragraphs with a clear point or argument that tells the reader what to expect. Then it's followed up by evidence that supports the argument or stance, and an explanation connecting the two and summing up the paragraph purpose and message. This method provided me with a clear direction for each paragraph and helped me stay focused on the main argument throughout my writing, and it especially brought me more confidence when writing about a variety of subjects. Another aspect of the PIE method that I found valuable was its flexibility for using multiple sources and adapting the method to multiple types of writing. I am confident that whether I use the method to write a persuasive essay, a simple reflection, and even applying the principle to creative writing will help me to turn thoughts into words more productively.
The method has transformed the way I approach writing, because it has allowed me to have initiative and structure in outlines and while actually writing. In the past, starting an essay was often the largest struggle for me. Using the PIE method has helped to reinforce the importance of using an essay for large peices, and having structure for any kind of writing.
