THE TRIO THAT DELVED INTO GENDER DISCRIMINATION

Introduction

You may wonder, what is gender inequality?

Miral: Gender inequality is when both genders are not treated equally .

Maame: Gender inequality is when genders are not being treated equally and do not get equal opportunities .

Stephanie: Gender inequality is when a gender is not being treated fairly and does not get equal roles and opportunities.

Why do you think this happens?

About the group

Though we are only females, we chose Gender Discrimination as we believe that all must be treated equally.

Fighting for women rights has been a challenge because of men hate

Gender inequality can make valuable men feel less of a man.

When men aren’t aggressive women wouldn’t have to be shy nor quiet

Not many women have gained their own rights\

They commit suicide or develop mental illness.

Men make women feel insecure, shy, quiet and many more

Men should be open and free to all to make all women feel happier, not insecure and many more

Girls are limited to their education because of gender assumptions of women and girls staying at home, poverty, and long distances.

They can not attend school, and become uneducated leaving them with the option of staying at home and keeping the household.

Educate teachers and parents that receiving an education is key.

Thinking Skills

.Fighting for women rights has been a challenge because of men's hate.

.Gender inequality can make vulnerable men feel less of themselves.

.Men are aggressive towards women, they should be able to stop that.

.Men are controlling towards women in the household and public.

.Not many women have gained their own rights.

.They commit sucuide or develop mental illness.

.If men are aggressive women feel they should be quiet and submissive.

.Women will feel controlled, and depressed.

.Men should be open to the idea, and help out.

.Male stereotypes should be stopped. Men should be able to have someone to talk to.

.Men should give women respect and allow them to participate in workplaces, they should be nicer to the women.

.Men should allow women to make their own choices.

Thinker skills

The cause is that the boys were bullying the girl for what she was wearing and for what she was doing.

The girl started to get annoyed and angry so then she showed the boys that she can wear what ever she wants and do what ever she wants

I will do a poster and a project about about gender discrimination and show them that all genders can do what they want.

Reflection

We liked the fact that she stayed positive during the times of world war 2. Also, she was able to at least write it down.

We connected this unit to the unit on peace and conflict and thought about brave women during war.

OUR INTERVIEWS

Inspired

I was inspired by Madam Dania because she had always belittled the effort or power women had and thought of men as supreme, but in believing in herself she was able to overcome many obstacles as a woman.

Empowered

I was empowered by Dr. Fatma because even though she has a lot of responsiblities as a daughter, mother and head of school, still she is working hard and doing the best and takes care of her responsibilities

Transformed

I was transformed by Madam Alpana because she kept on pushing to reach her goals even though she had a lot of discrimination in her home country.

Inspired

I was inspired by the way Mr.Gavor always fought for his rights and never mind if his job was thought of as a women job.

Empowered

I was empowered by the way Mr. Nazeer always stood up for his right.

Transformed

I was transformed by the way Mr. Henry by the way he tried to help his wife in chore and thought his kids to be open-minded.

Men are given a lot more opportunities than men. Not giving women a chance can underestimate their abilities to help in the community

Many girls were able to try out sports and have careers in it.

__________

Some people can not be their true selves just because of gender norms and society resulting in them hiding who they are or depression.

_________

Gender discrimination is reducing it is still a problem, but women have done a lot to get where we are today. Starting from 1888 to present times

Not giving women a chance can underestimate their abilities to help in the community

Encourage even more girls to stay active in sports, train girls from an early age to love sports or at least be active.

_________

We should allow men and women to express themselves.

__________

We should try and change people's perspectives of women. Encourage women sports and others.

We have to help women have access to good jobs where they as a person will be accepted and their abilities will be put to good use

We have to help kids understand that both male and females are equal, in sports, in doing tasks at home and all. We can teach boys not to have the idea that they are supreme and that they can not show their emotions, also girls should understand that they can try sports and play with cars and balls, plus that they no girl and boy toys.

Your Country

Write down Information

Lebanon

Lebanon has one of the highest overall

gender gaps in the world.

Lebanon gives great and fair rights to women .

For example, Article 7 of the constitution of Lebanon asserts that all citizens should have equal rights and duties regardless of gender. They also have Article 8 of the constitution of Lebanon that individual liberty will be guaranteed and protected by law; however Lebanese women still face gender discrimination.

Lebanon has made limited progress in promoting gender equality, empowering women, and opening the space for women to play their part in achieving sustainable development... For example, in 1953, Lebanon became one of the first countries in the Arab region to accord women equal rights to participate fully in politics.

Our survey with secondary students to collect information and data on culture, religion and gender discrimination

gender discrimination survey
Gender Discrimination- survey taken by students of ARIS secondary school

Our survey showed that 56.5 percent students have faced gender discrimination. About 37 percent students feel that maybe religion is a cause for gender discrimination. While many female took the survey and there were only 35 percent of males, around 57 .5 percent of students feel that culture is the main reason for gender discrimination.

BUDDY CLASS OBSERVATION - to collect ideas whether or not children do discriminate

What we thought

We wanted to know if children discriminate and have issues with playing or collaborating with the other genders. So we wrote to the home room teachers of Year 1 and designed an engagement with them so that we can observe them.

What we observed

We observed that many of the boys thought their dad's worked more than their mums, however they stated that the cook for them, bathe them, and prepare them for school. The boys picked colors, most of them picked blue and green. I asked them why they did not choose the other colours like pink and purple, they replied saying that pink and purple are girly colours. The boys in year 1 picked jobs. All of them had chosen football players, most of them did.We also observed that four of them picked pink, whiles

girls in year 1 thought that we can be equal, however they say that boys are faster and smarter in specific jobs and girls have specific jobs for girls.

As 3,say that we can all be equal.4 girls say that their favourite is pink because it's girly, however 1 says that they pick blue because it is really nice.

This little girl says she wants to be a firefighter because she thinks it's interesting to find a solution to stop fire.Whiles someone says that firefighter is for boys because boys work out to get abs and muscles but it's rare to find a girl workout or have ABS.

They played football and the boys won. We asked why and a boy said that the girls didn't do well.

At the end the all came to a conclusion saying that both girls and boys can achieve their dreams.

What we analyzed

We analyzed that most of the boys thought that girls were still weak, but the girls saw that the both genders were equal. We all tried to explain to the boys that the girls were active and very enduring during the match, even though they had not won. Most of the kids understood it. However a boy still did not. He kept on persisting, but after some time he understood that, when he said that girls were not sporty it was not true and that both genders can be.

We analyzed that the girls thought that the boys won the football match because they were more than them. After a while of the girls thinking them thinking the said that the they could win if they tried their best. However they thought that they are strong in the afternoon. They all concluded that both genders are equal and boys and girls can do the same roles.

While working on gender discrimination in INDIA and GHANA , Stephanie and Akua made a cartoon video to showcase their investigation.

We were inspired to do these animated videos because we thought it was a good way to express ourselves and make everyone aware of the discrimination in both India and Ghana.

GENERALIZATION

Starting from the 1800's feminist have fought and struggled in society to earn women rights

Some solutions for gender discrimination are

1.work together

2.to respect each other
