This month students explored principles of board game design through brainstorming, concept building, data collection, and observations of board games and board game designers. We learned how important all the components to a game are, especially a strong theme. They had some great brainstorming and ended up with awesome ideas for their games! Now for the creating!
Students also were challenged with some difficult warm-ups! We like to give our brains a workout in Horizon!🧠 🏋🏻
See if you can use the online tangrams to solve this tree puzzle below! Then test your critical thinking with the digital breakout, A Witty Winter!

These amazing students have been busy studying the history of toys and games and identifying trends of success. They have also applied marketing strategies in development of a game company name and logo. They all brainstormed, created and voted on the one to represent the company. It was a tie and the final vote is still to come, when we hopefully have everyone present next week!
We hope you will help us with some market research to analyze before starting the creation of some really amazing games!

Third grade Horizon students have been busy over the past few weeks exploring the steps of the Creative Thinking Process, FEFO. You can click on the link below to read about the process. Creative Thinking is the cornerstone to divergent thinking, critical thinking, and problem-solving. They were introduced to these terms: fluency, elaboration, flexibility, and originality to describe the steps.
Students then worked in collaborative groups to come up with an original product that solved a problem. They are very creative! See their prototypes below.

This week students became word detectives and learned how to use the power of adjectives to solve this dgital escape room! They learned the how to breakdown words by prefix, suffix and root word. We also continued work on their product development to solve a real world problem! I can't wait to share those next week!

This week students compared problem solving to creative thinking. We then explored the steps of Creative Thinking. Creative Thinking is the cornerstone to divergent thinking, critical thinking, and problem-solving. We introduced these terms: fluency, elaboration, flexibility, and originality to describe the steps.
Students were presented the 30 Circles Challenge to see how flexibly they could think about what to turn their circles into. I saw some very creative perspectives! One student drew a rolly polly rolled up and another drew the perspective of the top of the cake! Great divergent thinking! There were also lots of balls, planets and emojis!⚽️🌍🙂
Next week students will apply FEFO and identify a real-world problem to solve with an innovative product.
Students also worked hard to apply critical thinking skills to solve the Daily Set!

Great day on the hill in Horizon! We reviewed the four Cs and completed a Breakout to apply good collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills!
We took the True Colors Personality Test to reflect on the strengths of our personalities and recognize the strengths in others. We did not go into depth on this, but did a brief overview. We will use this information, the Habits of a Scholar and the 4 Cs to write a goal next week!
I encouraged the students to have their family members take the True Colors test. It's good to understand that we don't all have the same perspectives and that's ok! We used the paper copy below, but here is a digital version you could do at home!

Awesome day! I'm so happy to have your third graders in class! Today we discussed what the Big Idea of Horizon is! Students worked in groups to determine the meaning and purpose of our Horizon program!
Here are a few examples of the different perspectives. Each table ended up with one collaborative answer. The final answer that the whole class collaborated on is:
Horizon is a time to exercise your brain to collaborate, be challenged and show creativity to think outside the box.
We also practiced problem-solving skills to tackle a challenging riddle! Students worked hard applying the four Cs: critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creative thinking! See below! Pause before the answer and work together as a family to solve it!
