Rounding Up Jack White
By Mason Rowley (Sussex)
In the leadup for his newest and fifth solo record, former frontman for The White Stripes Jack White has released a new single. “Fear of the Dawn” is the title track of his upcoming album, which, based on its singles, will be a fuzz-laden hollowpoint of the high-velocity experimental blues-rock he’s made a career of since his departure from the White Stripes. The song clocks in at just over two minutes, with the focal point of one of the heaviest riffs White has put to a six-string in years.
The primal drumbeat and chunky bass punctuated with stabs of synths and theremin come together perfectly. White’s penchant for soloing hasn’t been lost in quarantine; he travels the fretboard with an ease almost unseen in the modern rock scene, putting face-ripping force into every note. This, alongside his first single, “Taking Me Back,” has me very excited for Fear of the Dawn.
