Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance
Shannon Hummel and Cora Dance have been in artists in residency at ARGS since 2019. Cora Dance has a professional company, an apprentice company, and youth companies in Brooklyn, NY and Alleghany, VA. ARGS Dance currently has three dancers working in the Apprentice Company, who are paid to dance and perform professionally alongside the Professional Company.
The company works with all dance majors in their fall and spring residencies, and offers professional dance opportunities. In the fall, Shannon Hummel works with ARGS Dancers on the Crossroads Project; during the spring residency, the professional company teaches master classes for freshman dancers, holds open rehearsals for upperclassmen; and throughout the year the company engages ARGS dancers with showings of professional works in process.

The Crossroads Project
Led by the professional artists of Cora Dance, the Crossroads Project is a collaborative performance project as well as a method of inquiry and self-reflection on our experiences of home. The project uses visualization, journaling, reflective listening, movement improvisation, collaboratively created choreography, and storytelling to reveal strongly held feelings, beliefs, and judgments about our home communities while challenging participants to imagine their understanding of local community as a tool for creating understanding on a national basis. Predominantly centered on tweens, teens, and young adults, Crossroads uses the arts in a safe, welcoming, and joyous environment to increase cross-cultural understanding between seemingly divided communities and to break through the fear, judgment, and stereotypes that keep us from seeing one another as human beings rather than “us” and “them.”

The Latin Ballet of Virginia
ARGS Dance has been hosting The Latin Ballet (LBV) Extension Program since 2024. One day a week after school, LBV offers Ballet, Flamenco, and Afro-Cuban classes to ARGS dancers. This program supports rolling enrollment, drop-in, and pay-what-you-can options, and helps diversify our dancers' training for those who opt to participate. LBV also provides performance opportunities with Repertory classes, and the company often volunteers to work with ARGS for fundraising events like our annual Salsa Night.
