What are we learning right now?
Our Topic 4 is Ratios where students explore and differentiate between additive and multiplicative relationships as they begin to study ratios, which are comparisons between two quantities using multiplicative reasoning. They compare quantities using part-to-part and part-to-whole ratios written in words, colon notation, and fractional form. Students identify fractions and percents as part-to-whole ratios. Then, they apply ratios to real-world situations to compare part-to- part and part-to-whole representations, focusing on reasoning with ratios. Next, students use different strategies to determine the relationship between quantities using models, tables, and graphs. Students write equivalent ratios, convert between measurements, and solve real-world problems to develop proportional reasoning. When graphing, students conclude that equivalent ratios form a line that passes through the origin. Finally, students solve problems using tables, double number lines, tables, and graphs, comparing the models as well as scaling up and down to write equivalent ratios.
