This week we are teaching the concept of length. In early primary this means measuring using measuring objects such as shoes, hands, blocks, pens etc rather than using formal units from a ruler/measuring tape.
Students need to understand/be able to:
Measure from the start to the end of what is to be measured - you can't start part way along or miss a bit out.
The measuring object needs to be the same size e.g. if using pencils, you can't use different sized pencils.
Measure in a straight line along the edge of what is to be measured (if measuring the length of a table, straight across the table and not in a wavy line).
For accuracy the measuring objects used to measure an item should not overlap each other or have gaps between them.
Thursday - Choosing a measuring object
Friday - The House Hunt, comparing length of items
Monday - Measuring Things in the Home
Tuesday - Skip Counting by 10's
