Japanese – Term 2, 2026
Ardtornish Primary School
In Term 2, students will focus on developing their reading and writing skills in Japanese, with a particular emphasis on hiragana—the basic Japanese alphabet. Learning hiragana is an important foundation for reading and writing in Japanese, and students will build confidence recognising, reading, and forming these characters
Junior Primary
Junior Primary students will begin building their foundational Japanese literacy skills through a range of engaging and hands-on activities. Students will:
Learn to recognise and pronounce hiragana characters through songs and games
Use memory strategies to help recall each character
Practise writing hiragana using correct stroke order
Read short, simple stories with a partner, using pictures to support understanding
Create and share their own short stories using hiragana
Use interactive iPad games to reinforce character recognition
Participate in hands-on activities, such as forming hiragana with playdough
Upper Primary
Upper Primary students will build on their existing knowledge to develop greater fluency and independence in reading and writing. Students will:
Practise reading hiragana regularly using interactive platforms such as Blooket
Monitor their progress through fortnightly reading check-ins
Work towards achieving “hiragana karate belts” to demonstrate learning growth
Learn to write more complex hiragana combinations
Create and share short written texts in Japanese
Strengthen recognition skills through digital games and activities
Continue developing accurate pronunciation through class games and songs
Through these activities, students will develop confidence in their Japanese reading and writing skills while enjoying a variety of interactive and creative learning experiences.
