Teacher turnover costs schools millions of dollars each year. In addition to the financial cost, it can also take a toll on the culture of the school and our students. So what are some ways to support our teachers and help them stay for years to come? One way is by investing time and money into supporting their self-care. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can help us understand and target strategies to supporting our teachers at each level. Dr. Tina Boogren, author of Take Time for You, recommends that educators craft self-care plans with their "go-to" strategies to support each level. Dr. Boogren suggests that if we build habits where we check-in with ourselves to see if our needs are being met at each level, we can easily see where the breakdown is and implement strategies to meet those needs better.
Level 1 - Physiological Needs Are my basic needs being met?
Level 2 - Safety Needs Do I feel safe?
Level 3 - Belonging Needs Do I feel like I belong?
Level 4 - Esteem Needs Do I feel confident?
Level 5 - Self-Actualization Am I living my best life?
Level 6 - Transcendence Am I connecting to something greater than myself?

The Arkansas Career Continuum is a great way to encourage teachers to grow in their teacher leadership skills while still in the classroom. For many of our teachers, opportunities to lead help them to stay energized and engaged in the profession. These opportunities might include coaching their colleagues, mentoring novice teachers, or serving in a lead role with an initiative your school is implementing. DESE provides two designations on their license that can also provide support and recognition for their service and expertise. Teachers can designate in two different areas to gain valuable experience and recognition in a variety of areas:
See the one-pagers below for information on each type of designation.
