Chicken pox has been reported in one of the other hubs - be cautious if you notice a rash of blisters on the chest and back. This is spread by coughing, sneezing, and contact with chicken pox blisters.
Impetigo (aka school sores) - going around in our spaces: Impetigo - we have a number of cases in wider Kaunuku. This is a highly infectious skin infection that causes blisters, often on the face around the nose or mouth, but they can be anywhere on the body where the skin has been damaged in some way, eg. cuts or scrapes. Impetigo sores are crusty-looking and they are very contagious. That means they can be spread easily to other parts of your own body or to other people by touching. If your child displays any symptoms please keep them at home and make an appointment with the GP as they will need to be treated with antibiotics.

Welcome back to school and term 2. This term Whaea Andrea is doing the weekly newsletter, so it will usually be sent on the weekend.
Things to know for week 2:
Year 2 swimming- parent help desperately needed!: Year 2 parents will have seen information about the children doing 2 weeks of swimming lessons in weeks 3 and 4. At this stage we have not had any parents/grandparents/adults offer to come with us. For the lessons to go ahead, we need to have a minimum of 2 extra adults each day. Please see prior emails for details and let us know ASAP if anyone can help on any day.
Year 3's- trip to marae: this is a 'save the date' for Year 3 parents so you know that they are going on a trip to Ngāti Moki on Tues 30 May (week 6). Parent help will be needed. The date is still being confirmed.
Are you a electronics whizz- or not!?: We have a small robotic mouse that is used for learning to code at school, but it has been broken. One of the wheels is not moving (and before anyone asks, yes we have turned it off and on, and I've tried changing the batteries!). If you think you might be able to have a look and see if it is fixable, please let Andrea know. Photo attached is of the mouse robot. It is about as long as a ball point pen.
Reading books: will start coming home this coming week.
That's is for now. Enjoy the warm autumn days.
Ka kite ano,
Brooklyn, Deb and Andrea
Welcome to the end of the first Term of 2023.
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the picnic last night. It was a lovely evening and it was great seeing families connecting over kai, which was the main purpose for this evening. We managed to squeeze the picnic in before the winter days arrive.
You will have seen the postponement about the donut making. We will do this the first day back. Hopefully we will have everyone fully recovered from the end of term bugs.
Parents of Year 2 Children:
Year 2’s will go swimming at Rolleston Pool, starting in Week 3 (8th - 12th May and the 15th - 19th May). There will be 10 lessons and they will be swimming everyday. The cost of the lessons will be $88. The majority of this cost is the bus! Please let us know if you are able to parent help. We require 2-3 parents and an emergency vehicle everyday to make swimming possible. If you are able to help even one day, it would be so appreciated. A separate email has been sent to all parents of Year 2 students.
Have a safe and happy Easter.

This week we have had Life Education lessons in the truck. The children have really enjoyed this experience and many are still curious about Harold the giraffe and where he hides in the truck!
We had an amazing afternoon at Foster Park with the Year 3 children at the Selwyn Sports Trust ‘Sport Spectacular’. We had the best weather, the children were amazing and had a great afternoon playing lots of new games using the fundamental basics of sport. A huge thank you to all the parents who came along and helped. Your support enables us to take part in these events and is so appreciated. Hope you enjoyed your afternoon with us.
On Monday, Louie and Mack will be cranking out over 350 donuts as part of their project to get a mini tramp for the learning space. They have done an amazing job taking orders and counting the money. They have raised over $150. Well done boys- it has been a big job so is going to be so worth it! It is an amazing thing you are doing for everyone in Kaunuku 4-6.
Remember that this Wednesday is our Kaunuku picnic night from 5.30 to 6.30pm. Hopefully we get a better weather forecast-it’s looking pretty good at the moment. Bring your tea down to school and catch up with other families from our Hapori.
This week is Whaea Neve and Whaea Mallory’s last week. They have both had very successful teaching placements and we wish them all the best for the future. It has been a pleasure having Neve and Mallory in our learning space.
