In kindergarten, students begin learning to read by building their phonological awareness.  They can begin to tell you the sounds in words they hear and enjoy singing songs with rhyming words. They begin making a connection between the letters printed on the page and the sounds for each letter.  They build their vocabularies through read alouds and hands on activities.
