Latin: “great words”

“We must love them both, those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject, for both have labored in the search for truth, and both have helped us in finding it.”  -Thomas Aquinas

Created by members of the Aquinas College Writing Center, Magna Verba is an annual publication that showcases academic writing composed by students in classes at Aquinas College. This publication is evidence that critical thinking and analytical writing are valued at Aquinas College; we aim to display our student commitment to the pillars of community and study. Magna Verba strives to be as interdisciplinary as possible and encourages submissions from across disciplines.

If you have any academic writing from your time at Aquinas College, we encourage you to submit to Magna Verba. We want to include pieces from every genre and discipline, including humanities, sciences, business, math and everything in between: papers from I&E, lab reports, art history papers, research papers, literary and critical reviews, original case-studies, field notes, capstone papers and more. Submissions cannot exceed ten pages and cannot be previously published.

Look back at work you have written from your time at Aquinas. Does anything strike you? Are there any pieces you are particularly proud of? We encourage you to submit it! Any academic writing composed during your time at Aquinas is welcome. If you have written in what is traditionally considered a creative writing genre (i.e. poetry, fiction, etc.), we encourage you to submit your writing to the SAMPLER

We invite submissions from all currently enrolled students — freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, continuing education, and grad students. You can submit up to three pieces of writing, but only one may be published.

Please submit your pieces as a Microsoft Word Document in double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman.

Submit to: Magna Verba Submissions— We want to fill Magna Verba with your great words. The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 19, 2024 at midnight.

PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO SUBMISSIONS ENTERED BY CHRISTMAS BREAK: MONDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2023.

What Happens Next: Submissions will go through a blind review by an editorial board comprised of AQ Writing Center consultants who will select pieces to be included in Magna Verba. Students will be notified if one of their pieces has been accepted; selected pieces will require a Writing Center author-consultant appointment prior to the submission of a final, revised composition for publication.
