General Overview
There are 4 essential steps:
Complete the requirements for your degree and have your degree posted
Complete the BRN online application for the NCLEX
Complete your LiveScan fingerprints
Register with Pearson Vue to schedule your exam at one of their testing locations
Overview of the Process
There is no official day for you to submit your online application. The BRN suggests at least 2 weeks prior to the degree posting; however, there is no penalty or issue if you submit the application early; we just don't want it too early. Therfore, it is suggested to submit your BRN application the weekend prior, or the week of, your Kaplan Predictor A Exam (usually Week 8 of the semester).
You will need to pay for 3 separate items:
the BRN application fee (for licensing)
the livescan fingerprint fee (for criminal and background check clearance)
the Pearson fee (for exam proctoring)
You will take your Kaplan Predictor A exam on the scheduled date listed above (TBD). Once you pass your exam and complete your Residency hours your instructor will submit your final grade to the APU Registrar.
The APU Registrar will begin the process of confirming and posting your BSN degree. Ideally, this process will take 2-weeks, however, it can range anywhere between 2-weeks to 6-weeks. The ELM Department and SON will monitor the status of your degree posting.
As soon as degree clearance is received from the Reigstrar, the Associate Dean will complete the degree conferral process with the BRN. No transcripts need to be sent by you or the Registrar for this process.
The BRN will adjudicate your application and once approved, will notify Pearson you are approved to schedule your exam.
Pearson will send you an Authorization to Test (ATT) email. This will allow you to schedule your NCLEX test date.
If you receive BRN approval, but have not received the ATT email from Pearson (and you did register with them and pay the proctoring fee), you will need to call Pearson's customer service to inquire.
If you did NOT receive BRN approval, but your degree has posted, you can contact the BRN first to inquire, and then second with APU (email the Associate Dean) to verify your degree was conferred with the BRN.

LiveScan Fingerprint Process
Requirements:
You must submit your Application for Licensure with the BRN before completing the LiveScan.
Without an application on file, the BRN will reject the prints and you will need to repeat the LiveScan process.
There are 2 fees for the LiveScan: the government fees and the fingerprint rolling fee:
The Federal (FBI) and State (CA DOJ) combined LiveScan fee is currently $49.
The fingerprint "rolling," or operator, fee is charged by the LiveScan vendor, is separate and in addition to the $49 federal/state fee, and can range from $25 - $60 or more depending upon the vendor and location.
Students are free to go to any CA approved LiveScan vendor to have their fingerprints taken.
On-site Option:
Anthony Persad, the ELM Program Manager in Monrovia, has been approved by the School of Nursing to offer LiveScan fingerprint services to APU Nursing students on campus at a discounted fee of $25. Thus, a total LiveScan fee of $74 (FBI fee + CA DOJ fee + Operator fee). As a result, for those who are interested, you can schedule your LiveScan fingerprints on the day of your Predictor A Exam or on any other day (by appointment) with Anthony on-site in Monrovia.
You can schedule an appointment with Anthony using this link: https://calendly.com/wblivescan/30min. If you have any questions, or if you want additional information you can also email him at support@whitebeard.us
As a reminder, you can go to any LiveScan vendor. Choosing to go through Anthony is optional and is offered as a convenience to APU students since he is on campus and offers the $25 discounted fee. He will also let you know when your fingerprints have been processed, which is not customary for LiveScan vendors.
The BRN website has a link for other LiveScan vendors located in CA.
Please remember to add the federal/state fee ($49) to any LiveScan "rolling" or operator fee you see posted online. Therefore, the total fee is $49 (Cal DOJ + FBI) + the Operator Fee.
Also keep in mind, most mobile services usually charge travel fees in addition to the other federal/state and rolling fees listed.
Request for Interim Permit - This is Optional - If you check the box “Request for Interim Permit,” an additional fee is required. The Interim Permit allows an employer to hire you while your BRN application/ NCLEX results are pending or in-process, meaning you are waiting for application approval or to pass the exam. This can be useful if you already have an offer of employment and need to begin work or start the hiring process.
The Application for Public Health Nurse Certification (PHN) can only be completed once you pass the NCLEX Exam. You will need this certification if you ever decide to apply for employment at any public health organization (such as the County - Sheriff's Department, LA County or local Public Health departments, etc..., Federal Government - like the VA Office, Air Force, etc... and others).
You will need to complete the application and submit a Transcript Request for APU to send your transcripts to the BRN.
