Welcome to the Cinematic Science Club! The purpose of our club is to create a dynamic platform for high school students and teachers to explore and comprehend science concepts embedded in cinema. Under the banner of the Cinematic Science Club, participants will delve into the realm of science and science fiction, utilizing films as a medium to understand and explain the intricacies of the world through the lens of various scientific disciplines.
At the heart of our mission is the alignment with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), aiming to actively involve students and teachers in a holistic learning experience. The Cinematic Science Club seeks to demonstrate the real-world applications of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in our daily lives, igniting a passion for STEM subjects. Join us today in the pursuit of knowledge, connection, and a shared enthusiasm for the fascinating intersection of science and cinema!
Students (grades 9th - 12th) from different parts of the world will participate and collaborate with my students. Staff members from various school sites and districts can benefit from this project as we unit to engage in academic discussion to help motivate students in pursuing careers in STEM.
Students who join can be past, present, and or future science students within OISP. Members must be acclimated with a desktop/laptop to navigate the Internet and post videos. Prior to subject matter knowledge is necessary but not required. A minimum understanding of eighth grade science (CA standards) would be ideal but not absolutely necessary. Resources and lesson plans will be made available resources and lesson plans will be made available to assist with the specific learning process.
This project is intended to help students interact socially, culturally, and intellectually through applications of science in cinema. Please be sure to submit the required Google form and obtain the necessary permission (district/parental) before beginning. This Global Learning Project is closely aligned with NGSS Standards and they are available for reference if needed. Click here to access the California Standards for Chemical Reactions.
When - The Cinematic Science Club will begin January 21st, 2024 to May 24th, 2024.
Where - members will connect with each other on this site. Members will receive training through a Google slideshow that will assist them in learning how to navigate their way through the site and what they will be doing as members. *Project collaborators and members will meet on Thursdays via zoom.
It will help link students from the entire school to understand and discuss the subject matter. Aside from this, they will observe and learn about the different chemical reactions that are observed by students across the media. This will incorporate culture and background information that will help them learn about themselves, others, and the subject matter at the same time. Giving students a worldview and making course content relatable is conducive and productive towards mastery of the subject. Participants should care because they can help impact their own learning experience by interacting and helping others. Those that want to learn and build background knowledge and connections with the material will benefit by educating themselves in various processes and learning to view the world in a different light. Science is all around us, and identifying the reactions that make life possible is the first step in understanding the world and the impact we have on it.
