The Foreign Language Achievement Testing Service (FLATS) at Brigham Young University, a viable option for many APU and non-APU students, offers tests for more than 50 languages. For APU students, the exam is pass-fail, and students who pass through the 102 course level will receive 3 elective units. The tests cover listening, reading, and grammar, are in multiple-choice format, and allow students two and a half hours to complete.

What score do I need in order to pass?
No specific score is needed; FLATS is a pass/fail exam covering levels 101, 102, and 201. FLATS will send an email with your results within a couple of hours. If you pass FLATS levels 101 and 102, you will receive 3 units and waive your General Education Foreign Language requirement. Your official transcript will be mailed in 3-4 weeks.
If I don’t pass, can I retake it?
Yes, after 6 months have passed.
Do I get units for passing?
You will receive 3 elective units and waive your General Education Foreign Language requirement.
What is on the test?
It is a multiple-choice exam. The FLATS exam has listening, reading, and grammar components that span the first three semesters of a language class.
