The Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse (Citizen CATE) 2024 is a network of volunteer teams equipped and trained to capture videos of the Sun’s corona – or atmosphere – during the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse. Akron Public Schools has a team composed of the following students: Stella Cundiff, AEC; Edward McHenry, Buchtel; Elijah Fleming and Ogheneovo Erho, Garfield; with Dr. Katrina Halasa, Teaching and Learning Department, and Mr. Clayton Cundiff, Garfield. The APS Team will be working with the Twin Lakes Team members: Brad Bolton, Chris and Carol Martin, Dave Smith, and Marcia Long -Team Lead. Our team name is CATE Team 24 which is one of the 35 teams across the country. We will be making two- to three-minute video clips that will be combined into a 60-minute movie that reflects the magnetic structure of the Sun’s middle corona, revealing the electron density and showing how magnetic energy is converted into heat. The movie will also reveal the motion of density features in the middle corona, allowing scientists to measure the strength of the solar wind. To learn more about the project CLICK HERE.
