WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME
IB LEARNER PROFILE
APPROACHES TO LEARNING SKILLS
Young learners become more independent and critical thinkers through the development of the approaches to learning skills.
Engage in conversations with your child about their day, guiding them to recognize and understand how they used their approaches to learning skills (thinking, self-management, social, communication, and research skills).
INQUIRY
The PYP encourages an environment of curiosity, critical thinking, and exploration through inquiry.
Celebrate your child's natural curiosity by encouraging them to wonder and ask questions about the world they observe.
Ask your child what they learned at school that day and then ask them “what questions do you still have?” This could lead to some wonderful research opportunities!
ACTION
Lifelong learners don’t just learn new things...they apply what they’ve learned in new ways!
Ask your child what they are learning and find opportunities to take action. Action could be as simple as cleaning up your local park or making a choice to waste less water as a family. Encourage your child to brainstorm their own ideas for how they could make change within your house or community.
MAKING CONNECTIONS
Students are encouraged to think conceptually so that they may develop deeper connections between diverse areas of study.
Challenge your child to connect 2 seemingly unrelated ideas and brainstorm all the ways they are related/connected (ex: lunch and community helpers...both involve systems, both provide us with things we need...) This could be a really fun and easy “game” to play in the car!
PROMOTING INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS
The PYP strives to develop learners not only embrace their own culture but can appreciate the culture of others as well.
Try a new cuisine/dish as a family and research what life is like in that part of the world
Practice speaking in the language your child learns at school (even if it’s just a few words!)
