Welcome to the Personalized Learning in APS virtual resource hub!
APS's approach to Personalized Learning signifies a shift in our teaching practices. Personalized Learning in APS is "one size fits one" education. Personalized Learning begins with delving into the distinct learning styles, individual learning needs, and inherent talents of every student, fostering a seamless alignment with their dreams and goals. At APS, we firmly stand by the belief that students truly flourish when they become the architects of their learning journey. Our goal is to foster an environment that not only places students at the heart of their education but also values their voices, fosters self-awareness, cultivates social awareness, and forges strong relationships – all through the lens of Student-Centered Design.
Join us in discovering the innovative elements of the Core Four: Flexible Path and Pace, Targeted Instruction, Reflection and Goal Setting, and Collaboration and Creativity. These four elements form the cornerstone of APS's personalized learning philosophy. These pillars empower students to shape their education, reflecting our commitment to excellence, equity, and empowerment while we prepare our students for college, career, and life.
Atlanta Public Schools has partnered with Ed Elements and adopted the Core Four of Personalized Learning. The Core Four is an educational framework that illuminates the path to personalized learning excellence championed by Atlanta Public Schools. This innovative approach revolutionizes the way we educate, putting the student experience at the forefront and empowering both educators and learners to embark on a journey of growth, discovery, and achievement.
Each element of the Core Four stands as a pillar of this transformative approach, designed to amplify student engagement, foster self-awareness, and promote a thriving learning community. The elements of the Core Four are:
At the heart of our approach lies the concept of student ownership. It's about putting students at the center and tailoring instruction to meet their needs when they need it. This means giving students the reins to their learning journey and making sure their education fits them perfectly, ensuring they're engaged and successful.
Student reflection & goal setting are practices that can build a bridge for students between the content and why they are learning it. While these are two separate practices, they can, and should be interconnected in the classroom. Reflecting on what we know and how we learn builds self-awareness that can make goal-setting a meaningful experience.
Students learn in different ways
and to truly personalize the
learning experience, there must
be opportunities for students to
progress towards mastery of their
learning through flexible learning
pathways and at different paces.
Developing nurturing learning environments (self-awareness, social awareness, strong relationships) creates the conditions to personalize learning for students.
At its most actualized, targeted
instruction means that students
can articulate what instruction
they are recieving and why, and
students have some choice over
the instruction they receive
Personalizing learning
encourages students to work
with one another, share ideas,
create new solutions and
projects, provide one another with
feedback, and, in the process,
learn more about themselves.
The Core Four framework aligns seamlessly with both the APS 5 and APS's commitment to equity, inclusivity, and innovation, creating an environment where every student's potential is nurtured, celebrated, and realized. Through these four elements, APS paves the way for a future of education that empowers students to embrace their unique identities, embrace their passions, and chart their paths to success.
