Mrs. Epps Human Anatomy & Physiology
Welcome to the Fall Semester of the 2022/2023 School Year!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to my science class for the 2022/2023 school year at Frederick Douglass High School! It is my goal for my students to have a productive year full of excitement and learning! I look forward to meeting and interacting with all students! GOOOO ASTROS!
The Science Georgia Standards of Excellence drive instruction. Human Anatomy and Physiology is designed to continue student investigations that began in grades K-8 and high school biology. The curriculum is extensively performance and laboratory based and it integrates the study of the structures and functions of the human body. However, rather than focusing on distinct anatomical and physiological systems (respiratory, nervous, etc.) instruction focuses on the essential requirements for life. Areas of study include organization of the body; protection, support and movement; providing internal coordination and regulation; processing and transporting; and reproduction, growth and development. Whenever possible, careers related to medicine, research, healthcare and modern medical technology; and case studies concerning diseases, disorders and ailments will be emphasized.
Educational Background and Philosophy
I am a native of Mississippi and I matriculated to Georgia for the opportunity to teach the students at Frederick Douglass High School. I currently hold a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Master of Arts in Teaching Biology from Mississippi Valley State University. I have also completed graduate work in Environmental Science at Jackson State University.
This is my 24th year in education and my 6th year teaching at Frederick Douglas High School. I chose to become a teacher because I want to make an impact on the world and I feel that I can do that through educating the future generation. Students are unique individuals with a diverse set of needs. It is the teacher’s responsibility to meet the needs of the whole student both academically and socially, and it is the student’s role to receive this instruction and nurturing of emotions. When both parties perform their assigned roles efficiently, then the purpose of the education system is achieved.
