I am passionate about art, working as an art teacher by day and expressing myself as an artist by night, primarily through watercolor painting. The subtle beauty of our world serves as my main source of inspiration, especially drawing from elements like water, sunrises, sunsets, sailboats, reflections, and nature. My creative process involves an intuitive interpretation of the world, allowing the colors and landscapes stored in my mental library to flow freely onto my work surface.
I am in my 12th year of teaching and love every minute of it! I spent my first five years teaching inner city, in Grand Rapids Public Schools, as a high school art teacher and the past seven years in a rural community, at Allendale Public Schools, as a middle school art teacher.
I teach with a deep passion for art, driven by its power to connect individuals and its therapeutic qualities. My goal is to share this love with my students. Beyond the final artwork, my focus lies in witnessing the progress and growth of each student throughout our time together, from the initial day to their last. The most fulfilling moments for me are when students experience that "AH HA!" moment, the realization of everything I've taught them coming together. These moments are what I live for. Regardless of whether my students pursue a career in art, I hope they carry these skills with them, using art as a refuge from life's stresses when needed.
I create for myself. To allow myself to be free in the moment and create a piece that comes from my heart and soul. The more I create, the more I am able to connect with myself, others, and the world around me.
I love nature, which means I am outside all the time! I hike, run, paddle board, anything that involves being outdoors and probably close to the water. I am also a yoga instructor. I have a dog, Finnigan, we call him Finn for short, and a cat, Lenny. I love to travel and have been to 48 of the 50 states and to Italy and Haiti.
