Ms. Spiekermann

Hi! I'm Ms. Spiekermann and this is my second year teaching at Eisenhower. Last year, I taught 7th and 8th grade Special Education ELA, and this year, I have transitioned to Literacy Strategies and Inclusion Science. I graduated from Texas A&M in 2003 with a B.A. in History and a minor in Classical Languages. I love reading and playing with language and am so excited to get to share that with my students!

I am expecting a baby in November and will be on maternity leave from roughly November 12 through Winter Break. There will be a long-term substitute with my classes for the duration of my leave. I will be providing plans for the sub and your children will continue to receive all of their services. I am happy to answer any questions you may have in the meantime.

Learning about more effective ways to engage and support our students with some of the fabulous EMS staff!

Dead Poets Society

Yep, we're going to hang out with some of these guys this year!

The first real novel and as funny as The Princess Bride. We aren't quite ready for this in class, but we will work toward being as engrossed in the written word as Don Quixote.

Outside of the classroom, I spend most of my time with my four children and one escape artist hamster. All of us (except the hamster!) enjoy exploring on foot or in the car. Books are my splurge of choice and I am almost always of the opinion that they were better than the movie, but feel free to challenge me on that any time.

The Poet Dreams of the Classroom

I dreamedI stood up in classand I said aloud:
Teacher,why is algebra important?
Sit down, he said.
Then I dreamedI stood upand I said:
Teacher, I'm weary of the turkeysthat we have to draw every fall.May I draw a fox instead?
Sit down, he said.
Then I dreamedI stood up once more and said:
Teacher,my heart is falling asleepand it wants to wake up.It needs to be outside.
Sit down, he said.
-- Mary Oliver, Swan, 2010

My goal for this year is to make sure that the students in my classes learn the whys as well as the hows, dream wildly, express themselves creatively and clearly, and begin to know how to keep their hearts and minds wide awake.
