Welcome Letter for 2021-2022 School Year

August 2021

Dear Parents or Guardians,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year. I am Patti Miller, your student’s support and main teacher. I have endorsements in K-12 Special Education and English. I have a licensed and certified paraprofessional that works with me, Judy Yocom. We are excited for the school year and being back in person.

We will be working on life, social and vocational skills throughout the year. We will be going off campus to explore job sites and practice our social and life skills out in the community as the school and district permits. We will be walking and using public transportation. We may ask for money for bus fare on occasion. If we will be off campus during lunch, we usually will eat at a fast food restaurant along the route and your student will need to bring money to buy their lunch. They can always bring a lunch from home or we can get a sack lunch from the cafeteria at no cost this year.

Our life skills class will include learning kitchen safety skills, reading instructions on packages, reading and understanding a basic recipe and cleaning up after yourselves. We will be putting those skills into practice. We will usually make a snack or something for lunch at least twice a month. We try to make items that your student will be able to make by themselves or with little supervision. Being able to make a meal is part of becoming independent and a needed life skill. If your student has ANY food allergies, please let me know.

Our class has two elective classes this year. During my PLT period, which is 2nd, most of the class is in weight training with Coach Williams. The others are in study skills with Ms. Englisbee. My Prep period is 7th and all our students are in ceramics with Kim Del Margo. My EAs will go with our students to their electives. They are there to help modify the assignments and support our students. A few of our students may have another elective in addition to these. Some electives will have a lab fee and other materials needed specific to that class. I will send out information for the electives when I get it.

You students should bring their chrome books to school every day with their charger. While we won’t be using the computer as much as last year, we will still have google classrooms set up with assignments and so will their elective teachers. We have set up an announcement google classroom so you will find information there.

I usually communicate using email. If I do not have your current email address, please email me at miller_pat@aps.edu with it. If you would like me to communicate with you in a different way, please let me know. Please contact me with any questions or concerns you have regarding your student.

Thank you,

Patti Miller
