Mrs. Flippo is an Albuquerque native who graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor's of Music Education. After graduating she moved back to New Mexico and has taught for Santa Fe Public Schools as well as APS. This is her 8th year at Janet Kahn School of Integrated Arts and her 12th year teaching overall. She returned to Oklahoma over the course of 3 summers to complete her Kodály Certification in her early years of teaching and earned her National Board Certification December 2022. When she isn't having a blast making music with her favorite musicians (her students) she can be found hanging out with her husband and sons, singing, reading, cooking, or making art!
Welcome Back to MUSIC!
Every year things change-new teachers, classmates, routines...but here are some things that will NEVER change:
1) My goal for music is for you to LEARN and HAVE FUN learning.
2) My first job is to keep you safe and sometimes that means doing something or NOT doing something that you don't like.
3) I have high expectations of you because you are smart, strong, and kind humans. You get out of music what you put into it! If you work hard, show responsibility for yourself and respect for all, you WILL succeed!
Students will receive grades for music in the following areas over the course of the school year:
-Compose & Develop Musical Works (based on formal assessments and in class activities)
-Perform & analyze music individually & in a group (students are never forced to sing individually in front of others for a grade but are required to participate in singing activities just as they are required to participate in math and reading activities in their gen ed. & SPED classes)
-Apply music concepts & vocabulary to interpret and evaluate music (example: describing music using musical words)
STANDARDS SCORES:
4-Exceeds basic rubric requirements (see sample rubrics)
3-Meets basic rubric requirements (see sample rubrics)
2-Inconsistently meets basic rubric requirements (see sample rubrics)
1-Does not meet basic rubric requirements (see sample rubrics)
EFFORT SCORES:
Although effort scores do not show up on the report card, they do play into the standards scores. I cannot assess something I cannot see. If a student is consistently refusing to participate, not following directions, or causing a disruption that prevents the class from learning, that does impact their standards score. I try to communicate via email about these instances but also don't want to continually bombard you with what feels like negative feedback on your child's behavior. If you have questions or concerns about your child's grade, behavior, or what they're doing in music academically, please feel free to reach out to me via synergy or email!
