Literacy

Daily Five

I use the Daily Five Framework in class to help teach literacy in the classroom using small groups. The five components of Daily Five are Reading in a small group, Reading to self, listening to Reading, Writing, and word work. While we are distance learning I will give students work to do in each of these 5 areas as well.

Read to Self - Students are taught to pick out a "good fit book," a book in which they can read the majority of the book by themselves, without help from someone else. Since Kindergarten students have not learned to read yet, I teach them to make up their own story to go along with the pictures. They can also pick out letters or words that they know.

Listen to Reading - Students will listen to books read to them on the computer. I will assign books on Seesaw that students will listen to. Students can use the following website at home:

https://www.storylineonline.net/

https://www.starfall.com/h/

https://www.getepic.com/app/

We will be use Benchmark for literacy in reading and writing. We also use Fundations for our Phonics program. I will also use the Science of Reading to teach to read and write, by learning the sounds the letters make and to teach high frequency words.

Writing - Students will work on writing narratives, opinion and informational pieces throughout the year. Students will use Benchmark to learn to write what they are reading about after reading the stories in Benchmark.

Word Work - Students will work on letters, word patterns, syllables, rhyming words, high frequency words and word games during this time.
