Week of September 30th: Mid-Term Progress reports will go home

Thanks so much to all families that attended Curriculum Night! We had wonderful discussions about the upcoming year! Another huge thanks to the families that have sent in snack donations! Your help is very much appreciated!

We are currently in the middle of our first Literacy Unit, Being a Good Community Member. We are comparing and contrasting a wide variety of nonfiction texts. We are also using the texts to identify text features, like a table of contents and photo captions, and using those features to answer questions about the text. We will begin our second Unit, Many Kinds of Characters, in a couple of weeks. That unit will focus on fiction stories, mostly fairy tales, and will teach us how to identify the elements of fictional text. We are also working on short vowel sounds for our spelling words and making CVC words, like cat, big, dog, etc.

For math, we are finishing Module 1, working with quantities of numbers to 20 as well as number words (ten, thirteen, etc.) and ordinal words (first, third, etc.) We will be testing for this module by Sept. 5th. We will then begin Module 2, focusing heavily on addition, using counting on and memorization of facts for quick recall. The unit also focuses on measurement, using such vocabulary as “longer than,” “shorter than,” “wider than,” and “narrower than.”

Basic addition and subtraction facts are crucial in First Grade. By the time students reach second grade, it is expected that they have their basic facts within 20 memorized. Please start practicing now! I will work on them in class, but I need your help to reinforce memorizing facts at home.

REMEMBER: Your child will have a homework packet every Friday (or just before the weekend.) Homework will include math, spelling, writing and nightly reading. I will be sending home book bags for some students very soon. If you are interested in using a book bag for your child please email me at naase@aps.edu.

The website to pay for your child’s lunch bill is www.myschoolbucks.com.

Questions? Concerns? Please email me at naase@aps.edu.

Thanks so much! Mrs. Naase
