This year the class will embrace our unusual learning environment and make gains toward all of our individual learning goals.
We will...
READ- Students will spend time building their reading skills through the use of background knowledge, inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking. The program we will use is the Ready program, but this program will also be supplemented with novel units, articles, poetry, music, and drama.
WRITE- Students will learn about trait based writing. This program helps students focus on each element needed to create writing which is rich in detail and clear in voice.
SPEAK- Students will participate in socratic seminars and fishbowl discussions on a regular basis. This will help students learn to find their voices when it comes to finding deeper understanding of text.
PLAY- We will use play based learning to develop a love of Language Arts. It is my goal to help students find something about ELA to love this year.
Students will need to go to classroom.google.com in order to access their work for this year. You will use your APS login and password to access your Google Classroom.
I will be posting the daily meeting code on the home page of the Google Classroom. If you are going to be absent, but would like to join the class virtually, please contact me via email, and I will open the Google Meet for you at that time.
We will also have all of our assignments and projects posted to the Google Classroom.
Make sure to submit any completed work. You will need to complete and turn in 100% of assigned work. I ALLOW all work to be corrected and resubmitted until you are able to show mastery of a topic. I can't help you become a master of language if you don't turn in your work. :)
This year, students will be using their time to build their individual skills using Lexia Power Up. This program identifies individual strengths and areas of growth for each student and provides engaging lessons individualized to each student.
Power Up will be a large part of a student's practice grade. Students are expected to engage actively in 45 minutes of Power Up lessons per week. Each week students will receive a practice grade based on the number of minutes they spend ACTIVELY working on Power Up. (This is available to me in a report.) Additionally, students will receive a grade based on their completion of Power Up units. Students should complete 10 Power Up units per week. The completion of a unit will be marked in the grade book in the rubric for the weekly Power Up assignment.
This program is excellent because it allows me to monitor each student's individual growth and target their individual needs.
Students will use their APS Classlink login information to access Power Up.
