Madison Middle School

In-Person Learning

STARTS APRIL 5

Introduction

What will in-person learning look like at Madison Middle School?

The goal of this page is to provide answers to many of the most important and common questions parents have as we transition into in-person learning. We will do our best to give you as much information possible with the understanding that there may not be detailed answers for everything. We are working through and adjusting many of our systems and procedures and will continue to do so in the next few weeks. Our goal is to bring students onto campus in the safest manner possible. As you read this page, please understand this one vital point: school will look and feel different than when your student last attended a year ago.

NEW!

Buses

We just received our bus schedules. Here is a link to view the routes and their times: Madison Bus Routes

District leadership wanted me to let you know that a shortage of bus drivers remains. This means some buses may be taking on extra routes. This could result in buses delivering students to school a little late at times. In addition, routes may need to be adjusted, which could result in a pause in service. Lastly, buses are taking all the necessary COVID precautions, such as having all windows down, making masks mandatory, etc., but the bus is a small confined space that is difficult to avoid close contact. In other words, there are risks with sending your student on the bus. Please take this information into consideration as you make transportation plans for your student.

NEW!

JumpStart for all Grades 4/5

We have planned Jumpstart on 4/5 and it will be for all students in all grades. We have activities for each period, so it will be our focus all day. If your student is planning on staying in remote, please do not send them on Monday for Jumpstart. We made sure all the activities and information would include the kids in remote learning.

Also, we will have another JumpStart when we begin the new school year in August.

NEW!

NEW! Attendance Guidelines

NEW! Attendance

Attendance is an important part of school. Here are some need-to-knows for in-person learning:

  • Students attending school in-person must remain on campus all day. Combining online learning and in-person learning will not be allowed. An example would be coming to campus for electives only, but attend online for core classes.

  • We want to limit the number of visitors in our front office for safety reasons. Please keep your student home for online learning for the day:

      • If your student has an appointment during the school day.

      • If your student is ill.

NEW! Other Important Items

  • Locker rooms will be closed. PE students will not be required to dress out.

  • Our front office will be closed to visitors. Parents and guardians are asked to remain in your cars at all times while on campus. If you need assistance, please call our front desk at 299-4735.

  • All meetings with staff will be done virtually by appointment.

  • Testing:

      • NM PED has given districts the option to allow parents to opt-in to the standardized state test. If parents want their student to take the test, please let us know. The test will be given off site at another APS location.

      • Access Testing for English Language Learners will also be opt-in. Please contact us if you are interested.

Options

In-person or Remote Learning: Parents/Guardians have the option

Families have the choice to send their student to campus or remain in remote learning. Please complete the In-Person Intention Form by March 19 if you have not done so already so that we can plan accordingly. The data from this form will help the district plan for transportation and it will help us better meet the needs of our students. There is no option, however, for students to attend a combination of part in-person and part remote within a day. If attending in-person, students must remain on campus the entire day unless checked out by a parent/guardian. The APS School Board also decided to allow parents the week of April 5 as a grace period to determine whether students will come to campus or not. I'd like to encourage parents to make a decision by April 9 one way or the other so that students can make an easier transition from remote learning.

A Student's Day

A Student's Day

  • All students will continue to be on a block schedule similar to the one we have used during remote learning (see schedule in scheduling section of this site).

  • School will begin at 8:05 and end at 3:05, Monday through Friday.

  • Students will attend half of their classes each day, either the odd periods or even periods plus advisory or study skills each day, just as they do now for remote learning. The exception is Mondays, which will be all classes.

  • Students will be moving from one class to the next.

  • The primary mode of instruction will continue to be via the Chromebook.

  • Teachers will continue to provide both synchronous and asynchronous times within each period.

  • Some teachers may not be on site April 5 or beyond, but they will be teaching from home. In these cases, a substitute will be in the classroom to help supervise students while they participate in remote learning.

  • Teachers will be responsible for instructing both remote learning students and in-person students at the same time. We ask for patience and grace as teachers make this adjustment to doing both modes of instruction.

School Supplies

School Supplies for In-Person Learning

  • Students will need to bring their APS issued Chromebook and charger to school every day. We have a limited number of Chromebooks and chargers, so it is important for students to have their own.

  • Students need to bring their Chromebook fully charged.

  • Earbuds

  • Pencil/Pen and a spiral notebook

  • Backpack (students will not be issued a locker)

  • Mask

  • Refillable water bottle (water fountains will be turned off as a safety measure)

  • Extra layers such as a hoodie or jacket (A/C dampers and fans will be running, and windows and doors will be open to increase ventilation)

Masks

Mask Guidelines

In accordance with the NM DOH Public Health Order, everyone must wear a face mask while at school, during school-sponsored activities, and on school transportation.

Face Mask Criteria

  • Face masks must cover the mouth and nose and fit snugly against the side of the face in order to contain respiratory droplets.

  • The types of allowable face masks:

    • Face masks made of two or more layers of cloth

    • Face masks with a clear plastic window

    • Surgical, procedural, N95 or KN95 face masks approved by CDC

  • The following face coverings are NOT allowed:

    • Masks that have exhalation valves or vents

    • Bandanas

    • Scarves

    • Neck gaitors

    • Face shields (alone); if worn, must be worn with a face mask underneath

  • Students who do not have an allowable face mask will be given one.

  • Students who do not follow the face mask criteria will be sent home. This will not be a disciplinary action, but done to ensure the safety of everyone.

Dress Code and Cell Phones

  • Click the link to view our Madison Dress Code in detail: MADISON DRESS CODE

  • Cell phones must be turned off and placed in a student's backpack during school hours. Students with a cell phone out risk it being confiscated and turned into the office.

          • 1st Offense: Confiscated and turned into the office until the end of the day--student can pick it up after the bell rings at 3:05

          • 2nd Offense: Confiscated and turned into the office until the end of the day--parent/guardian must pick it up after the bell rings at 3:05

          • 3rd Offense: Confiscated and turned into the office. It will be placed in the front office safe for one week.

          • 4th Offense: Confiscated and turned into the office. It will be placed in the front office safe for the rest of the school year.

Breakfast and Lunch

  • All students have the option to receive free breakfast and lunch every day.

  • There will be no snack bar options.

  • Students can bring their own lunch from home.

  • Students in remote learning will also have the opportunity to pick up breakfast and lunch for the week at a grab and go location.

  • Students will be eating outside, weather permitting.

  • Students may remove their masks only while eating and drinking.

  • Activities outside during lunch will be limited to:

    • Sitting with a small group of friends at least 3 feet apart

    • Walking the track

    • There will be no sharing of sports equipment such as basketballs or footballs.

COVID Safe Practices

  • Social distancing will be maintained to the greatest extent possible (this is the exact language and guidance from NM PED and DOH). Due to the number of students who are present for in-person learning, it may not be possible for social distancing to occur in many of our classrooms.

  • Each classroom has a hand sanitizer station and cleaning supplies to wipe down desks after each class period.

  • Hand sanitizer stations are located outside each restroom.

  • All frequently touched areas, such as door knobs will be wiped down throughout the day. All bathrooms are on a schedule to be cleaned and checked--hand soap, paper towels, and toilet paper will be full and stocked at all times.

  • Classrooms will be cleaned every evening. High-touch, horizontal surfaces will be wiped down, floors will be swept (mopping will happen every other day), trash removed, and cleaning supplies stocked.

  • Staggered passing periods have been scheduled to limit the number of students in the hallways at one time.

  • Students who display COVID-19-like symptoms will be sent out of the classroom immediately and assessed by the school nurse. The nurse will determine the next steps per the COVID-19 protocol for individuals displaying symptoms.

  • We have identified two isolation rooms for students to sit in while waiting to be picked up. These rooms are located away from other classrooms and our front office to limit exposure.

  • If there is a positive case of COVID-19 on campus, all close contacts as defined by DOH will be notified and given instructions to quarantine for 10 days.

  • All medical information will be kept confidential, including a staff member's vaccine status and the name of any person that has tested positive.

  • All a/c dampers are open and fans are functioning to help increase air flow.

  • Buses will have windows open to increase air flow.

Safety is Everyone's Responsibility

Keeping everyone as safe as possible is our number one goal, but we can't do it without your help.

Here is what we need parents/guardians to do:

  • Keep your student home if they have a recent onset of any of these symptoms:

    • Fever of 100.4 or higher

    • Headache

    • Fatigue

    • Frequent Dry Cough

    • Aches & Pains

    • Sore Throat

    • Diarrhea

    • Shortness of Breath

    • Been in close contact w/ anyone who has tested positive

    • Been in close contact w/ anyone who is experiencing symptoms

  • Let us know if your student tests positive for COVID-19 right away.

  • Talk to your student about following all safety guidelines.

  • Students who are ill should remain at home, and if they are feeling up to it, can attend class remotely. This will help encourage students with any symptoms to stay home.

Madison In-Person Schedule

Dropping off Students

Students may walk or parents can drop off students using the student drop off lane ONLY! Please do not drop off students along Moon St. This is a bike lane and it is illegal to park there even to drop off a student.

Because traffic will be heavier than normal in the morning, we ask that you extend patience and grace to other families. It is not going to be easy, but if everyone is kind and patient, all students will be dropped off safely. We are going to ask that you follow this plan to help keep the traffic moving through the drop-off lane:

NOTE: The drop-off lane entrance starts at Moon St. and exits out at Comanche.

IMPORTANT: The left lane is only for through traffic. For safety, do not drop off your student in the left lane! PLEASE, pull to the curb to drop off students.

DROP OFF TIME: To help ensure students are on campus when supervision is available, please do not drop-off earlier than 7:45.

6th graders: please drop off 6th graders behind the West building which is near the end of the lane. We will have staff directing you to where you need to go.

7th graders: please drop off 7th graders just south of the West building at Magic Island which is on the west side of the campus. Staff will direct you where to go.

8th graders and multi-grade families: please drop off 8th graders at the basketball courts.

Picking Up Students

Picking up students will be much like the drop-off procedure. However, we will be staggering the time to ease the traffic. Students will go out to the pick-up lane with their teachers for assistance at the following times:

Mondays

  • 6th grade at 2:55 behind the West Building

  • 7th grade at 3:00 just south of the West Building at Magic Island
