Class Syllabus
*This Syllabus is a living document and will be updated occasionally. The class syllabus and policies are subject to change at the teacher’s discretion.
Over the course of the year, you will engage in reading and writing activities and assessments based on mastery of the Common Core State Standards and WIDA English Standards. This course will prepare you for academic success at Manzano by establishing strong foundational skills necessary to excel in all content areas. You will develop proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening; in expressing your ideas about the human condition; and studying the techniques used by published writers.
German 1
German 1 is an introduction to the German language and culture. Communication is an important skill in every environment. As technology makes it easier for people to make connections globally, the world is becoming increasingly accessible. In this environment global citizenship is becoming very important. This class will serve to increase students’ awareness of the culturally diverse world we live in.
German 2/3/4
German 2/3/4 is a continuation of the study of the German language and culture. This class will serve to increase students’ awareness of the culturally diverse world we live in and to improve their German reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while exposing students to the culture of German-speaking countries.
All students are expected to take an active part in the learning environment of the classroom. This means coming to class on time, being prepared to learn, and working cooperatively with your peers. The more you participate, the more you will learn!
All learning objectives are listed in the weekly agenda. Most classwork is posted in Google classroom. Students who are absent may turn in their work in google classroom or when they return to school. Notebook work turned in in google classroom may be printed and pasted into the student’s notebook upon return to school.
Students with questions should contact Ms. Keller via email, private comment on an assignment in google classroom, text to google voice number, Remind message, or in person before school. Contacting Ms. Keller in a timely manner to ask questions about the assignment(s) is the student's responsibility.
Albuquerque Public Schools is committed to student success. Reducing truancy in school will improve a child’s academic and personal success. You will continue to receive messages regarding your child’s attendance through School Messenger for daily attendance issues, two-day truancy, five-day truancy, and ten-day truancy. When a child reaches ten unexcused absences he/she is considered a habitual truant:
NMSA 22.12.9 (A) states that (1) “habitual truant: means a student who has accumulated the equivalent of ten or more unexcused absences within a school year: and, (2) “student in need of early intervention” means a student who has accumulated five unexcused absence within a school year.
As a parent your assistance with attendance compliance is critical. Remember that Compulsory School Attendance Law (NMSA section 22-12-1) and City Ordinance (11-10-1 et. Seq.) require that a student must attend school every day with no unexcused absences.
Unexcused absences include the following:
Non-school sponsored activities or trips; and,
Family vacations outside of the normally scheduled school breaks.
The following are reasons for an excused absence with the appropriate documentation:
Illness
Limited family emergencies
Medical, health or legal appointments
Suspensions
Religious commitment
Deployment of a military parent
*Please note that as a classroom teacher, I am unable to mark a student's absence as excused or unexcused. If you have the appropriate documentation for an excused absence, you must send that documentation to the secretaries at the front office and they will update your student's attendance accordingly.
Your APS email address is your student ID number@aps.edu, and the password is the same as your StudentVue password.
I highly suggest you sync this account to your preferred email app on your cell phone so you receive notifications when you receive emails from your teachers.
I will communicate with students primarily via google classroom and private comments on google classroom assignments. You can set your google classroom to send you email notifications when comments and assignments are posted.
I will communicate with student families primarily through the email linked in parentvue/studentvue.
Please make sure that your contact information in parentvue/studentvue is up to date.
Students will need the following every day:
a 70 page notebook
(This should be left in the classroom.)
a pencil or pen
their school issued chrome book
their chrome book charger
*If you cannot get a notebook and pencil or pen for any reason, please tell Ms. Keller and she will help you.
Students will be expected to bring their school-issued Chromebooks and chargers to class with them every day. Please encourage your student to charge their Chromebooks every evening when they get home.
Students should use their Chromebooks during class to do the following:
Access Google Classroom and the Google Suite for school assignments
Send and receive emails to teachers, counselors, and other school personnel
Use the internet to conduct research for school assignments
During class time, students are not to use their Chromebooks for any of the following:
Playing games
Watching videos, TV shows, or movies
Accessing social media
Completing work for another class (unless they have explicit permission to do so)
Since every student has been issued a school Chromebook, I expect them to keep their phones in their assigned phone caddy pouch for the duration of class unless I give them permission to use their phones during class time. Acceptable phone use is limited to the following:
Listening to music when working independently with explicit permission
Internet access for academic purposes with explicit permission (such as looking up definitions of unfamiliar words, completing quick assignments on Google Classroom, etc).
Adding assignments or academic reminders to their phone calendar with explicit permission
Students are also expected to keep other electronic devices out of sight and powered off or silenced during class. This includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, airpods, smart watches, gaming devices, tablets, personal laptops, school distributed chromebooks, and other electronic devices.
During class time, students are not to use their phones for any of the following:
Wearing air pods, earbuds, or headphones during whole class or small group activities
Making phone calls
Facetime or Video calls
Playing games
Watching videos, TV shows, or movies
Texting friends or family members
Social media use (TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc)
Taking selfies or pictures of other students
Any other activities that district the student or others during class time
In accordance with the district policy, cell phones, AirPods, and other personal electronic devices are to be kept turned off and stored away during class per the teacher’s specific classroom policy. This may include keeping phones in a classroom phone caddy or in backpacks. In rare cases, students may request explicit permission from the teacher to use their phones for classwork only, however teachers are not required to agree to this request.
First offense: Students will receive a verbal or written warning from the teacher. This may include the phone being held by the teacher until the student writes an apology letter, signs a contract, or has a conversation with the teacher about appropriate use.
Second offense: If the student uses their phone inappropriately a second time, the teacher will follow the same protocol as the first offense and will also either call or email parents.
Third offense: If the student continues to use their phone inappropriately, the teacher will submit a behavior referral to administration for general misconduct, and administration will determine the appropriate consequence per the APS Behavior Handbook.
Fourth offense: In the event that the student continues to misuse their phones during class, they will receive another behavior referral to administration, and the student and their parents will be required to attend a restorative conference with administration and the student’s teachers.
If parents need to contact students during class time, please call the office at (505) 559-2200. Please have your child's ID number prepared, if possible.
