IEP

As you probably know from past years, students in the Gifted Program are required to have an annual meeting about their Individual Education Program (IEP) to ensure appropriate services and assess present levels of performance.

IEP Goals Questionnaire

At some point in the year, you will be contacted by Denise Dockendorff, who is head of the Special Education department (Dockendorff@aps.edu). She will collaborate with you on a day and time for the IEP meeting. She will mail home a confirmation of that date/time.

Parent and student input is valuable during the IEP regarding academic and extracurricular goals. They can be short term (within the school year) or they can be long term (secondary, post-secondary, etc.). Prior to the meeting, I will send home a handout for you to fill out about these goals and what information you can provide to ensure that your child;s needs are met during the IEP.

Next is the IEP meeting. Most meetings will take place in the Counseling office. After the meeting, you will receive a hard copy or emailed IEP for your records. If you'd like to speak with your child's teachers beyond the IEP, it would be most convenient to email that teacher and set up a time.

Once the IEP has concluded, your child will receive the agreed upon Gifted services for the next year. The next IEP will be conducted through the high school your child attends.

In middle school, Gifted services are provided through core content classes, such as Language Arts and Algebra. In high school, the Gifted Program changes lightly in that students will receive services through their Gifted electives. Advanced Placement (AP) or Honors classes are separate from the Gifted Program and do no require IEP documentation. Depending on what your student picks, they may or may not be in Gifted classes, regardless of the IEP. If a student chooses to take general education electives, they may always be readmitted to the Gifted Program the next year, with an IEP.

If you still have questions, please email me. I look forward to meeting you at the IEP meeting!
