While creating this portfolio I really wanted to experiment with different materials to look at different versions of humans expressed through a cartoon-like style. I also wanted to look at individual parts of humans, like a heart for example (shown below). I also wanted to show emotion through my artwork to make the viewer feel something when they look at it. The main question I was mostly focused on throughout completing my portfolio was what is a human and what specific traits or qualities make them a human? I took that question and experimented with it in many different ways. I took a more realistic approach with the piece “reaching for you” and a more cartoon-like approach with the “anxiety” piece.
My sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation and revision because you can see I used different materials to create each piece and as the portfolio progresses, there is an improvement in my artistic ability. I also provided experimentation sketches in my portfolio so you can see how I revised some of those images to create the final product which is also shown in my portfolio. For example the “anxiety” piece I provided my before and after sketches. In the before sketch it’s just a very basic composition of a body shape with nothing really special about it. However the final product which is also shown is much more colorful and has a lot more movement throughout it which also shows evidence of practice, experimentation and revision.

Height: 9.2 in
Width: 6.7 in
Materials: Acrylic paint, gel pens, pencil
Processes: To create this piece I created an outline using pencil and then I used gel pens to add the pops of color that are shown. I also used black acrylic paint to paint the background.
Image 2
Height: 11.7 in
Width: 8.1 in
Materials: oil pastels, pencil, paint markers
Processes: First I started by sketching an outline of the person I wanted to create. I then created dimension in the person using oil pastels. Finally, to get the background really bright, I used a sharpie paint marker.

Height: 11.7 in
Width: 8.1 in
Materials: oil pastels, pencil, paint markers
Processes: For this piece I also sketched out an outline in pencil and added dimension using oil pastels. I also used a paint marker to get a really bright and colorful background.

Height: 13.5 in
Width: 10.8 in
Materials: paint markers, pencil
Processes: To create this piece I sketched out an outline and then I filled it in using paint markers.

Height: 13.5 in
Width: 10.8 in
Materials: Acrylic paint, pencil
Processes: This piece was created by sketching an outline and then painting over it using acrylic paint.
Image 6
Height: 9.5 in
Width: 9.3 in
Materials: Crayola markers, acrylic paint, pencil
Processes: First I started this piece by sketching out a heart using a reference photo and then I used different color crayola markers to shade it. I then painted a black background and added gray highlights to make it look like the heart was on a record.

Height: 10 in
Width: 7.9 in
Materials: Pencil, Paint markers
Processes: To create this piece I first started by sketching an outline using pencil and then I filled it in using paint markers.
Image 8
Height: 5.6 in
Width: 10.2 in
Materials: Tempera paints, paint markers
Processes: When creating this piece I first started by sketching an outline of the brains and then I painted the background using tempera paints next. I then used paint markers to fill in the brains.

Height: 5.5 in
Width: 4.1 in
Materials: Pencil, Paint markers
Processes: To create this piece I first started by sketching an outline of a body and then I filled in that outline using acrylic paint markers.
Image 10
Height: 4.5 in
Width: 8 in
Materials: Pencil, Paint markers
Processes: When creating this piece I also started by sketching an outline which really helped since in my personal opinion, hands are really hard to draw. I then filled in the outline by using a dotting technique for the hands.
Image 11
Height: 11 in
Width: 8.5 in
Materials: Pencil
Processes: This was an experimentation sketch that I didn't end up making a finished version of mostly because I feel like I couldn't get the proportions right. I ended up making about 5 of these sketches in total, just using pencil.
Image 12
Height: 11 in
Width: 8.5 in
Materials: Pencil, Black sharpie
Processes: This was just an experimentation sketch for the final product shown above. I was mostly just tampering with different sketches of what kind of body position I wanted to do using pencil and then I outlined it in black sharpie.
Image 13
Height: 11 in
Width: 8.5 in
Materials: Pencil
Processes: This was a sketch I did when I was kind of stuck for lack of a better word and I just needed to sketch something basic to get the creative juices flowing.
Image 14
Height: 11 in
Width: 8.5 in
Materials: Pencil
Processes: This was the first sketch of head-empty(shown above). It's a very rough pencil sketch of an idea that I had. I ended up changing this sketch in the final product but this was just a cool way for me to experiment with different kinds of lines.

Height: 11 in
Width: 8.5 in
Materials: Pencil, Sharpies
Processes: This sketch was an idea for a body composition idea that I had because I really wanted to experiment with different female body shapes.
