Hello P-9 Parents,
My name is Kendall Taylor and I am fortunate to be your child's fifth grade teacher this year. I am a product of APS having attended Eisenhower Middle School, Eldorado High School, and La Cueva High School. After high school I attended University of New Mexico and earned a B.A. in History. Realizing that this was essentially a degree in unemployment, I decided to do something entirely different and taught English in St. Petersburg, Russia for a year. It was here I realized I love teaching. I returned to Albuquerque and earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from the College of Santa Fe. After teaching for a year at Armijo Elementary, I moved to Chicago and taught in a fifth/sixth grade split classroom for 10 years. During this time, I earned a M.A. in the Foundations of Education from DePaul University. I decided to continue my education and eventually earned a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Urban Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago. During my studies, I left Chicago Public Schools and taught undergraduate and graduate classes at UIC, National Louis University, and Concordia College. My classes included the foundations and history of education, race and ethnicity in education, youth policy in urban education, human development, and communications. I am currently teaching in the Ed department of UNM in the evenings as well. My experience teaching at the University level made me realize that my true love is K-12 education. I moved back to Albuquerque with my family in 2014 and have been teaching at Hubert Humphrey ever since.
I have a wonderful wife who is a recovering high school teacher. In addition to teaching, she has worked with urban student populations in an extracurricular program which culminated in the opportunity for students to build schools in various countries around the world. She has been involved in the Union movement and has organized for the United Farm Workers and Unite in Chicago. Currently, she is working for Ground Works Studio, a landscape architecture firm. My son attends Cleveland Middle School and is in 8th grade. He is interested in math, coding, and chess.
