The Coordinated School Health Department has developed a Physical Activity Campaign for our students called Be Fit to Learn. It includes monthly themes and focuses on different ways to help students Get Your Daily Dose!
Physical Activity plays a vital role in supporting academic performance and quality of life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Physical Activity Facts, students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance and classroom behaviors. Additionally, physical activity improves cardio-respiratory fitness, builds strong bones and muscles, controls weight, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduces the risk of developing health conditions.
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 years do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. Unfortunately, less than one-quarter (24%) of children 6 to 17 years of age participate in 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
The Student and Staff Wellness: Coordinated School Health Approach (CSHA) outlines our district wellness approach that follows a coordinated school health approach that connects health with academic success, supports student and staff wellness, and contributes to student academic achievement. Here is the CSHA Toolbox for Schools.
One of the nine components of the CSHA is Physical Activity. Schools are in a unique position to provide opportunities for all students to participate in before, during and/or after school physical activity programs outside of physical education programs, and to provide education on the health benefits of physical activity.
