Stories explain very important aspects of our lives, especially those that are very close to us. We were asked to tell a story about ourselves or invite people in our lives to do so. Here are some of those stories. Please be advised, some may not be suitable for smaller children.
We each picked songs that represent ourselves. Here are some of those songs.
EM - I chose this song because it represents me in a very personal way. I lost my mom about 7 years ago, and Green Day (and in particular this song) was one of her favorites. It also mentions at the beginning of the song “Like my fathers come to pass, 7 years has gone so fast”, which the similarity between the song and my situation is uncanny. It also talks about death and sadness and I can resonate with that on a very personal level.
HSW - This song represents me because it's a tune I've listened to my whole life. Coffee is now my favorite hot drink and Bob Dylan is a legend I genuinely appreciate and acknowledge as a true musician. The messages delivered in all of his music are very profound and a lot of the time, fathomless.
DGL - Sweet Chariot is a lullaby my dad used to sing to me. I feel it best represents the region we came from, which is the South, and our ancestry as slaves. It is a spiritual, whose origin dates back to more than a century ago. A man and African American slave named Walter Willis is credited for writing the song. I have always been drawn to gospel music though my relationship with a higher deity is still yet to develop. Despite this, I feel very connected to its meaning for my ancestors as they prayed and sang their way through history, from the fields to protests.
DGL - Whitney Houston is iconic and no one can say otherwise. The way she can belt a note is unbelievable, her pure talent is astonishing. I feel her sound represents what I strive for. There was a time when I wanted nothing but to sing like her, and that is what led me to audition for the musical in my first year of high school.
MR - Mana is a Mexican rock band. This is one of their more calm and slow songs. That is why I think it represents me best. This song has also been a comfort song. It has memories tied to it that make me who I am today.
DGL - What would I be without this song? Nothing. Selena was an artist who only spoke English though she was Mexican yet through her passion for music she learned Spanish, and it is so inspiring and I want to do the same. I grew up to this song and many of her others and I have begun learning Spanish through music as well, so this song represents my mothers family, and I.
JA - I feel like this song best represents myself. I don't do much in life so I don't have enough experience to properly define who it is I am.
BMM - This song represents me because I try my best to help people in their times of need. No matter how I'm feeling, they come first.
TR - This song represents me and my family because we have been through a lot together.
MF- The song represents me of my middle name (Busime). The song Ayo in Yoruba meaning is (Joy) in English. The reason I choose this song is because I feel extremely happy and special whenever I listen to it. I feel blessed. I feel that I matter and like my name more. When I was little my siblings used to make fun of my name because I didn’t really know that it meant Happiness (Joy) until I got older, so this song It gives me confident of me being me and myself, and don’t care what others think about it, neither how funny they make of it.

DGL - This song was written for The Secret Garden 1993 film’s soundtrack. I would put the entire soundtrack as they are all beautiful and exquisite and completely delightful and just my favorite thing in the whole world but I decided upon this one. I feel it best represents me for many reasons, one being that it was a leading reason for my desire to learn flute. Another reason is that I struggle with depression and anxiety and these songs can illustrate what I am feeling and are a comfort to me.
