Second Grade Weekly Spelling

It can take some students writing each word up to 25 times to ¨learn¨ (memorize) a word. The theory behind our new phonics program is that when students learn a spelling pattern and learn to listen to the sounds in words, they can apply the pattern to spell and read hundreds of words. With this theory in mind, we do not send home a set list of words for students to practice each week. Instead, UFLI phonics provides an at home practice sheet that provides a script to help you practice for a few minutes each night. An example home practice sheet is included below. More information about how to practice can be found later on this webpage.

Each week a new sheet will be sent home with that week's pattern words. Spelling tests are taken each Friday.

How should we Practice Spelling At home?

Each week your child will come home with "Home Practice Sheets" that will provide a daily script for how to help your child practice at home for just 10-15 minutes a day!

The document on the left explains each component of the at home practice sheet and what to do to complete each section. Practice can be done on paper or using the digital word work mats. There are two different versions of the word work mats. Clicking the links below will bring you to the different digital word mats.
- beginner word work mat: has only the 26 letters in the alphabet
- intermediate word work mat: includes digraphs (ch, sh), r controlled vowels (ar, er, ir), and vowel teams (ai, au)

It is important that you practice all three components listed on the Home Practice page sent home each week, as students are assessed on all three parts: new concept words, irregular or heart words, and sentence dictation.
