Wishtree by Katherine Applegate
Macmillian, 2017
Fiction
Wishtree is a great anchor text to discuss immigration and community. The text uses Red and the animals that live within her branches as a way to portray bigger issues such as differences between people and being apart of a community. We also see these ideas reflected in Samar and Stephen and their journey in becoming friends and the community's journey to acceptance. Red relives her experiences of immigration and being exposed to many different cultures and traditions. We learn about the town's history of immigration and how people from different cultures and religions can all live peacefully within a community.
Katherine Applegate is an award winning young adult and children's fiction writer. She won a Newbery Award for her book, The One and Only Ivan. Katherine lives in Northern California with her husband and two children.
