About me:
Professional:
I'm a Professor of Accounting at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, having gone through 22 years of schooling (no that is not a typo, although some may consider that somewhat of a waste of time). The funny thing is that I hated school through high school and didn't care much for college. In high school, I almost didn't graduate from missing too much school, missing because I didn't want to go, not because I was sick. After putting in time in public accounting, private accounting, and a short stint in marketing research, I took the plunge into "professional student" life (i.e., being a professor).
Personal:
My personal life includes a lovely wife whom I've been married to since 1992 and three boys. Most important to my life is my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For more about my testimony, click here. Feel free to email me or ask personally, and I'll happily tell you more. And if you want proof I have yet to grow up, you can click here.
On accounting:
I'm not really sure how I ended up in Accounting. After a Freshman year of taking math and science and goofing off primarily, with grades that were not that good, I knew my path of "just taking classes with no idea where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do" wasn't a good plan. Being a slacker, I continued that path by signing up for whatever classes I could find. Somehow I ended up in an introductory accounting class. I did well and continued with it, again, not thinking about what that meant long-term. I was pretty clueless. In fact, my last semester in school I wasn't even looking for a job. I assume my parents had no idea or they might have been scared I would be asking to move back home after graduating. But I did get a job. Later I returned to get an MBA, thinking I'd branch off of accounting. Again, my job hunt nearing graduation was lacking (but much better than my first time) and I got a job. Still not really enjoying the work, I somehow decided getting a PhD in Accounting was a good idea. It was hard; the first semester or two I wasn't sure I'd make it to the end. But here I am. All in all, I believe accounting may be the best major for anyone wanting to pursue anything within the field of business, and there are plenty of paths to take within the accounting profession to avoid those areas that you are less than enthusiastic about. If I did it all again, I'd probably pair it up with CIS or data analytics, or major in one of those and minor in accounting.
