The academic study of religion started formally at Appalachian State University in 1962. Over its more than 50-year history, the program made a significant contributions to the campus, the community, and the profession. That impact continues today through providing classes for thousands of students, hiring faculty who are leaders on campus and in the profession, and helping this campus community understand the role of religion in the world.
